Stop scaring me Danny! I looked up the specs, stable at 2Ω, 700Wx1 @ 2Ω which is what I'm wired for.

I'm not sure if your damaging it per say, I think as long as the coil or amp hasn't burnt you haven't done any damage but I really don't know.

You say the sub is 4ohms but wired to 2 ohms, so it's a dual voice coil. I would wired the coils in series to bring the impedance up to 8ohms. It won't be as loud but you won't burn you amp or sub. That is a nice amp and I would treat her right. My recommendation would be to use that amp for all your speakers, and get a new small amp for the sub. I would even get an amp just a bit bigger than what that sub is so later you can upgrade to a higher power sub.

at a local shop here they have a 2 ohm DVC alpine type R that i can wire up to 4 ohms or they have a used mtx thunder4405 5 channel amp that has a seperate subwoofer channel. Specs are below.

MTX THUNDER4405

POWER 12.5 VDC
2 Ohm Load
50 w x 4
200 w x 1
4 Ohm Load
25 w x 4
100 w x 1

POWER 14.4 VDC
2 Ohm Load
125 w x 4
300 w x 1
4 Ohm Load
65 w x 4
150 w x 1

What do you suggest i do, change the sub or amp?

300W out of the MTX is not nearly enough to fully power a Type-R, you would need a mono, not 5 channel, amp for sure. Plus, it's 5 channels and amps the speakers @ 25Wx4 and the sub at 100Wx1

You can get a new Type-R 12" DVC 2 Ohm for about $115 online, the sub would like to see 500WRMS at 2 Ohms

If I were you, I'd sell (or try to) both the amp and the sub, grab the Type-R online and find a brand name 500WRMS @ 2 Ohm amp on the cheap.

EDIT: You can get an Apline MRP-M1000 Class D Mono amp for $275, making the total $390 + shipping. That's a very nice set up for the price.

a mono would be ideal to power a sub for sure, but i would rather not run two amps in my car, im trying to find one amp that can power atleast my front speakers along with a subwoofer. I think for now i will just get the type r and atleast the amp and sub will both be running at 4 ohms for starters

Dude I think your making a mistake you will regret later on. Limiting your self to one amp is really going to hurt you more than benefit you. First off subs require a lot of power, those A/B switching amps waste a lot of energy and really aren't so great for subs. Don't toss that kicker amp, keep it and run all four speakers off it. If you only have fronts, just hold on to it until you get some rears. A type-R or any sub for that matter is not going to sound right until you get close to the power rating in a sealed box. A small digital amp for the type-r or even your current sub is the best way to go. Man I'm running three amps, there is no problem running more than one amp.

2 Amps is better. Think of it this way. You are way more likely to kill the sub amp. If that is a part of the multi-channel, you now have an oversized 4 channel amp and no sub. Also, with 2 amps, the multi-channel can stay much cooler and run more efficiently and cleanly. Lastly, with 2 amps, you can find the drivers that you want and match the power. With a 5 channel, you only have a few choices and will have to select the drivers for the amp, rather than the other way around. I've seen/heard both systems and both can be done well, but 2 amps gives a lot more flexibility.

Also very true, 5 channel amps are very limiting. That type-r is a nice SQ sub and I think sounds best in a sealed. Sealed boxes are not very efficient and require all the power the sub can handle. If not the bass is going to sound muddy and not as loud or crisp. Also that will allow you to get a 4 ohm DVC sub so you can run a 2 ohm load. Most digital amps support down to 2ohms, some 1ohm. Running impedance higher than that is going to waste power, and not let the amp pump the power it can.

Im just scared to run 2 amps on stock electricals, not to mention i have a smaller than normal battery (a 2003 accord battery in my 2002). Im just a high school student who cant afford to mess around with his car too much. On a side note, is it better to close to fully power a weaker sub, or have a higher end sub getting say half its rated power??
