Default 1998 Honda Accord ticking noise in the top of the engine

Hello I recently just bought a 1998 Honda Accord LX the 4-cylinder and have a notice for loud ticking noise at the top and of the motor can't tell if it might be my Riser arms or power steering pump or something else. It's not at the low end of the car but at the top end of car also is anyone who knows how to fix a rough shifting transmission do I have to flush the tranny or do I have to get it rebuild? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated

A loose valve can cause a tapping sound, however exhaust leak, belt idler bearing, and other problems can cause similar noise. Use of a long screwdriver as a stethoscope (very carefully!!) can help isolate the noise source.

Regarding AT, unless there is a code set for AT, you will need some pro help to determine the best solution.

good luck

It doesn't have hydraulic lifters, so checking/adjusting the valve lash should be on your list of maintenance things. It's 19 year old & we don't know if they were ever adjusted.

You'll find a lot of horror stories about 1998-2002 automatic transmissions. First, people only complain about problems - they don't post when the car works fine. Second, more problems seem to be with the V-6 auto. How dirty is the ATF??

Then be aware of a couple things about Honda automatics:
- Use Honda ATF - they don't get along well on Dex or the universal stuff
- Drain & fill - they also don't get along well with "power-flush" machines

ps - if it's your first Honda, also be aware that power-steering fluid is special too. Use "FOR HONDA/ACURA" or get it from a dealer. Don't use the universal stuff.
