Thumbs down '97 LX having oil issues/fuel MPG

Hi, hello! I'm new to the forum and I'd love to hear some opinions!

I have a 1997 Accord LX with a 4 cyl. Ever since I've had it, it seems to have oil issues. I averaged it out to be every 4 full tanks of gas, I'd have to fill it up with a 5 qt of oil (Quakerstate). Beforehand, I owned a 1997 Bonneville, and I hardly had to put oil in it at all!

Any other details.. it doesn't smoke/leak, etc. Any ideas, or is this how latter Accord's work?

Thank you!

Are you getting at that after 4 tanks of gas you have to add 5 qts of oil??? That is an excessive oil leak, and i would source it out soon... If so you should keep an eye on it closer, because you could do some severe engine damage if you run it low on oil.... How many miles are on the car??? You should not be burning that much oil... If so, it should be time for a rebuild, or a replacement of the motor...

Absolutely NOT normal.

I've had 5 HondAcuras and none of them used oil like that. Maybe down a pint or less every 5,000 miles.

Yeah, it's pretty messed up! I have 147,562 miles on it right now. Also, it was in a wreck with the owners beforehand that put it in the salvage yard. We bought it off a family that rebuilds cars and sells them off. This has been the only true problem to pop up!

It doesn't noticeably leak at all, even when I take a look under the hood it all looks good. It's strange because it runs perfectly fine besides that issue!

Gosh, with oil consumption that fast, you are probably leaking oil and burning it in the cylinders. Time for complete engine overhaul. Or just put a new engine in it. But if it were me, I would just scrap that car. Take it to some empty field, have some fun abusing the **** out of it untill it dies. Then take it to the scrap yard and get some cash!!

That is one of the most retarded things I have ever heard... Unless you are absolutely filthy rich or have money coming out your a$$, why would you tear up a car, that could simply need an easy fix, an overhaul, or a motor replacement(which you can get for 200 to 300 dollars)...
At a scrap yard you would maybe get 200 dollars out of the car, seeing as theres not alot of metal on the car... Thats not gonna get you too far and might not even cover the tow to the scrap yard... Have a mechanic look at it and give you an idea of what needs to be done...And dont let it get that far down before you put more in... You can also add a dye to the oil, and let the motor run and check for leaking, if its just burning that much oil, could just need an overhaull...

I get cars for free all the time. And I scrap cars all the time. 97 and older Honda accords come and go really... I don't see what the big deal is with scrapping it. It is really too expensive to have around. Costs money to fix, and cost money to have on the road. Doesn't cost me hardly anything to take it to the scrap yard, because I have a car hauling trailer. You will get a good 200 bucks at least from a honda accord. What is so retarded about that? 97 Honda accords really arn't worth fixing. They are butt ugly, and slower then sin. I mean sure, if you wan't to spend 1000 plus dollars on a new engine, go for it. But I don't think that car is worth having a new engine in it.

I would NEVER buy a used engine. It will just give you trouble down the road. Engines come and go as well. By the way, unless you are a ninja mechanic, there is no "easy fix" for an engine leaking/burning oil. It is going to be a HUGE pain in the *** nomatter what way you look at it.

How is it that you get cars free all of the time??? Its not very expensive to "have around", its actually just as expensive as having any other car "around"...There are almost no cars, that are "worth" fixing anymore, as the price on parts and labor is soo high... Any car you buy is gonna have querks and depending on what car you get, depends on what comes with it... Most of these cars last forever with no problems... 200 dollars is not alot of money and is usually more of a max number you will get from scrapping a car(we have done this quite a few times), and unless you want a super beater, its not gonna get you a decent car back... They are butt ugly, and slower than sin "in your opinion" and your can think whatever you want about them, doesnt mean thousands of other enthusiasts dont like them... Everyone has their on taste... Why on earth would you spend 1k on a new engine???You can pick up a h22 for a couple hundred more... These cars still have great re-sale value, and they come and go, because they can be cheap and reliable...

And an easy fix, would depend on how much experience you have, and what you can do yourself... Nothing is easy if you have no experience... But its easy to learn...
