So I want to make some mods, appearance and engine, to my car. I have a general idea of the end goal that I want to achieve under the hood, but have no clue how to get there.

Here's a broad description of what I think I want and don't want to do:

1. The engine runs well and consistently with little to no problems right now.
2. I have no intentions of being the fastest kid on the block, just need a nice, well tuned engine with a nice sound and some extra hp.
3. Although upgrading to a VTEC or 6 cyl motor would be nice, I'm not completely sold on swapping motors (but there's a small chance I'm willing to do it in the distant future).

Hope this is not too vague of a description for anyone trying to help. Any and all help/advice is appreciated.
