if by "not spending an arm and a leg" u mean under 1k , then h/i/e is the way to go. actually... no headers for u... 4 bangers don't like headers. go for intake and exhaust. then u may want to which to OBD1 to make more changes.

At the risk of sounding condecinding, take a professional driving class. I have seen people spend a lot of money trying to increase the HP ( which is fine ) but they neglect the biggest performance gain which is the person behind the wheel.

Classes are available just about everywhere and are usually cheaper than most of the mods you can bolt on. If you are only interested in going fast in a straight line than nothing is faster or cheaper than a bike. Most drivers think they are the best driver already. When you go to a track it is a humbling experience. It is said that less than 10% of the people on the road can drive their vehicle to it's true capabilities. JMHO

How really different are they... same concept, better flow (H/I/E) improve gas mileage and boost performance all for under $500, give or take, same price as a hydrolic system?

I did air intake, mild exhaust, cam gear (advanceda couple of degrees)andnoticed some improvement in throttle response.

I researched and talked to some people that had header and complete catback, most said that they noticed some differences in the higher rpm, however, they lost some take off power.

I wanted to keep my low/mid rpm power so I went with mild exhaust and adjusted cam gear.
If you can, check with a tuning shop hopefully some one can provide good advice to help you.

Good luck.
