Default How do I test the O2 sensor?

Okay, I know basically everything I need to know except one thing.

Alright, I'm going to be testing it with a Volt meter. So I locate and disconnect the sensor. There are 4 cables. I've always been told to use the solid black cable. But this cable along with the others goes to the plug. Do I just snip it in half, test it, and then crimp it back together after the test? I was just worried about the crimp and heat and whether or not this would mess up the O2 sensor if it were indeed a working sensor and I were to put it back in the car.

You should be able to test it at the plug... no cutting.
