Default Low coolant = vibration... Why???

I've read a few posts here where people say to check the coolant level before going to in-depth investigating vibrations, in particular at around idle. My '87 DX with 275k (that I just bought recently) began vibrating more and more when cold, then eventually even when warm. I filled the coolant, which leaks slowly, and sure enough, that took care of a good deal of the vibration. Why is that? Anyone know why low coolant causes vibrations?

Thanks,

Conybeare
