Default low fuel light not working

i just bought a 97 accord 4dr lx w/ 5spd tranny. the car is great and i love it but i think my low fuel light is not working. i have had the car close to empty a few times and always waited for the light to come on but it never has. i actually ran out of gas one time thinking that the light would come on. what do i need to do to fix this problem and is it a common problem for these cars? thanks in advance!

First you need to find the cause. Is it a bad bulb, sender or wiring? The easiest way to narrow it down is to ground the low fuel signal wire at the gas tank to see if the light shines.

mines a 94 and it does the same thing dude. it actually came on once, but when i tried starting it soon after, the car was on a hill with the trunk facing up, it wouldnt start. when the light comes on youre supposed to have 3 gallons left, about 70 miles. im not sure what to do either.

First off, chk fuse # 1 undr dash fuse box,, if bad replace it,, If ok, you need to ground the lt green/red wire at the fuel tank sending unit,, if lite comes on,, next chk to see if you get proper ground at the black wire , if good ground you got a bad sending unit..
if lite does not lite up when you ground the lt green/red wire,, could be a bad wire from sending unit to gauge or a burnt bulb
