Default Maintenance Required

Hi. My car has the "maintenance required" part of the speedometer on RED. I'm kind of wondering what it means. As I understand this should be green. what parts of the engine does this sensor report for? what could be wrong? no other lights are on,(brake, srs etc)the car runs good. its only got 97K on it. I bought it with 87K and I don't know what kind of care it was getting from its previous owner, But I'm out to fix it good to the best of my beginner ability. Any help would be appreciated. I'm all about "do it yourself" since I'm about to go back to school and funds are tight. I have a Haynes Repair Manual on the way that is specific to the car make, model, and year.

by the way PLEASE when responding be specific and if you don't mind, please describe what something looks like, many times I read responses here that seem to be directed to mechanics cause I'm more confused after readingthemthan I was before I did. Granted I'm only staring to get into auto mechanics, but you know how that goes, we were all there once.....I hope...Thanks

it automatically changes color after 7000 miles I believe... to reset it just insert the key into the slot to the left of your odometer... so it's not a sensor it's just kind of a reminder really.... so if that's the only indicator on and the car feels fine then nothing's wrong it just happens on it's own every 7k miles...

It doesnt really mean anything. Its not a light, but simply a colored gauge. Basically it goes from green to yellow to red every so many miles to make sure you check all the fluids and blah blah blah. To reset it just put your key into the slit right next to it.
