Question Neuspeed short shift adapter ?

I recently installed the Neuspeed short shift adapter on my 93 LX. I've read that in order to get the right clearance (between the adapter and the boot/, one must mount the shifter "tray" under the big metal bracket. I tried doing it, but it seems like it would only be able to mount up/fit if I flip the bracket over. I'm looking to see if that is the correct way of doing and also...how in the hell do you get those pesky metal clips off of the bracket? Pics and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yeah, I only paid $30 for it so I really can't complain either way.
