performance chips?

These GForce performance chips do they work?

But do they really work and do they cause any damage because they are monkeying with the engine code? Example prematurely shorten life of spark plugs and possibly other things?

Only performance chip you should be buy is would be socketed into a tunable ecu (exp. P28/p72) anything else is a complete waste of money.
