Default Power Steering help please

Ok, i was just out driving around in my "new to me" 1990 Honda Accord. Its a 5 spd dx model. Anyway, things were running alright, then i heard some chunking sound, smelt what to me smelled like burning clutch. then next corner i had no P/S. I pulled into the next parking lot and the belt was all torn, and there was P/S fluid around the resevoir and leaking onto the ground.

So i removed the old belt, and the pulley turns with some resistance, definately not seized.

I have gotten a new belt, just wondering what could cause this other than an old belt just breaking? what else should i be checking?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I had ya coverd on the duplicate post *L*

The belt breaking shouldn't have caused a severe amount of fluid loss, does the pump leak? are the power steering lines ok? not broken or torn or anything? when you lost power steering it sounds like your lines went out, you need to find out where that fluid came from first and why

ok i wasnt leaking any fluid before the break... and i dont seem to be since, just what leaked when it broke. i have run the car, and looked for leaks without it the belt on, and dont see a problem.

can Putting on the new belt give me any more problems?

Thanks,
Jeff

it shouldn't give you more problems but without the belt on there the pump isn't under pressure so you will not see any leaks that may be pressure related, put the belt on then start the car, have someone watching the pump or you watch the pump, rev the engine a bit then turn the wheel hard all the way in one direction then the other and watch/look for leaks and if there is one I'm sure you'll find it, make sure the pulley doesn't rattle, if it rotate just fine that's okay but if it rattles around then you may have a problem with a bearing..... just put the belt on and go through the steps I mentioned (make sure your fluid level is full) and if it leaks see what part is leaking and let us know or just fix it and tell us what happened.

Put the new belt on, no problems, no leaking.

I also nocited that despite the amount of fluid leaked, the resevoir is full still after cranking the wheel lock-to-lock many time.

I just bought the car, so maybe it was overfilled before, i dont know. Getting to learn it.
Thanks
Jeff

hmm... .that's bizzare that it's still full after leaking, I'm sure you checked all your fluid levels just to be sure but I'm glad it worked for you!, perhpas it was overfull and caused extra resistance and snapped the belt or some screwy thing like that.... Glad it's working
