RE: really bad problem
Try pulling the handbreak before you put the tranny in park, then the brakes hold the car in place, not the tranny. But yes, it does sound like a tranny problem and someone much smarter than me will help you pinpoint it.

RE: really bad problem
I'm not an expert on trannies but I believe there is a parking pin in the tranny and sometimes its not too rugged. It might have snapped, possibly putting the car into park before it fully stopped. What year is your car? If you have rear drum brakes they might be out of adjustment or not functioning to their true potential.

RE: really bad problem
according to my knowledge, the brakes are operated by a pump, which is operated by the engine, so if the engine is shut off, so is the pump.
my experience in this is trying to park a really old camaro on an incline, having the engine stall as I came to a stop, and having the mergency brake not do a damn thing until I started the old V8 up again, scooted her forward, then used the parking brake. worked like a charm!

According to my knowledge, the emergency/parking brake is operated by a cable, not the brake lines. That's why it's called emergency/parking brake so you can use it without hydraulic pressure in case you lose it.
