the biggest sign is a slipping tranny.... basically if you're going up a hill or just floor it and the rpm's start climbing but you don't seem to be gaining power/speed then they come back down a bit and you can feel it "catch" or all of the sudden start picking up speed that's the easiest sign to read for a slipping tranny... this is just for an automatic of course....

thanks...any other obvious symptoms you can think of? would it slip a little bit if you are aggressively shifting it manually (in an auto)? i tried that and it revved up for a sec then smoothly caught and took off..

if your car jerks when you give it gas on a rolling stop your tranny is as crappy as mine. The slipping is another thing. Slow finding of gear under hard acceleration... etc. etc.

for 98-02 accords a sure sign is leaking axle seals, jerking when slowing down, harder than usual shifting when cold, clunking when going in reverse.

I have a 1998 Mazda 626 automatic and the transmissions for that model from 1994-2001 are absolutely horrific.

The telltale signs for the 626 is slipping, O/D light comes on, and finally the car will not move forward when engaged in drive.

One of the recommendations from experienced Mazda owners is to install a transmission cooler ($50.00) since the transmission for that vehicle is not big enough.

I would seriously consider installing a transmission cooler on any 4 cylinder automatic.

is that normal for it to jerk like that when it is rolling...mine does it to and i have never owned a car that did that....all GM.first Honda.so i really do not know if that is ok or if there is a prob.

any thoughts?

I have a 98 accord dx with 190,000 kms 2.3(non v-tech)4 spd auto.

Well the Mazda 626 jerks when going into Reverse so whether this is normal for all other models I couldn't say.

Yeah I think my clutch is starting to go. Its a bitch going into 1st and 2nd. Sometimes my clutch pedal sticks and feels like it is not going to come back up when pressed. It also feels like there is less power in 2nd gear.
