Default RE: valve adjustment - how necessary is it?

Valve adjustment is always done on a cold engine. From Huey Honda in St louis it was $125 in June 05 total including a new gasket/tube seal set. and oil change and 10% discount since my car has over 100k on it.

Thank you all for providing good knowledge, this forum was good to learn about the car. I read the article for how to do the valve adjustment. Only thing I have confusion with was clearance in model year 94 to 97. service manual shows INTAKE 0.26mm(0.010in) plus or minus 0.02mm, and EXHAUST 0.30mm(0.012in) plus or minus 0.02 mm. which numbers are correct ????? I think DO IT YOURSELF shows lot smaller number than this.

I just wondering ... We need to ajust on cold or hot engine ? and how much the clearance ? in and out ?
thank you

If you go to the DIY there is a HOW TO write up with step by step infos ..

if you've got the numbers from a service manual and it's the right manual then stick with them and you'll be fine

one thing to note that even if your valves are NOT making any noise the lash should be checked and adjusted at the intervil that honda states simply because if they are too tight, they will still wear without making any noise........Also some F series motors are just plain noisey due to excessive wear on valve train component that does not affect engine life.... just makes it noisey

I second what YeuEmMaiMai said. I have checked and adjusted my valves 3 times in 4 months because the valves seemed noisy. But everything is within spec and the valves are only really noisy when the engine is cold.

Default volve adjustment

I have a 97 honda accord and I bought it jan 2011 (131,000miles). In April I started to hear a noise in the engine. I took it in and they said I needed a volve adjustment. I havent got one yet but my car runs smooth. Do I need to get one? how long can i go without getting one? Whats the average price for one? What could happen if I dont get one?

just a FYI on the + or - measurement. 94-97 accords have auto adjusting lifters. thats why they list the + or - numbers.

my car had 188,000 miles when i got mine adjusted, they were just barely off. paid 60 to have it done and it took an hour.

Only the V-6 has hydraulic lifters. All the 4-cyl have adjusters on the rockers.
