So my 2005 v6 sedan is leaking oil from what seems to be the back lower part of the engine. I looked at the top covers and didnt see anything so it is definately coming from the bottom of the engine. the oil pan is not covered in oil. Looking at the car from the front the oil is mainly to the right of the oil pan. it almost looked to me like the transmission. Going to go to the mech today after work but wanted to know if anyone knows what this may be and maybe how much to fix it.

P.S. it started a few days ago and leaks maybe a few drops over night when sitting and I dont know if it leaks when running but you dont smell any burning oil.

 

Well this is a day later, sorry - what did the shop say?

power steering fluid temperatures may cause the
power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely and
may cause the hose to crack and leak power steering
fluid. Power steering fluid leaking onto a hot catalytic
converter will generate smoke and could lead to an

Well I actually never went cus I have been so busy. I talked to my friend who is a mechanic and explained what it was doing and where it looks like it leaks. He said it is common for the rear main seal to leak after 8-10 years. I use Mobil one extended protection which is a thin oil so it could be why it is leaking. Was told that I could use a thicker oil like valvoline for high milage cars and it should work. If that doesn't work I could try a leak stopper like Lucas oil. If that doesn't work I need to replace the seal. I am going to check my power steering fluid level though to make sure it isn't leaking. Will the power steering fluid feel like oil? If not then it is an oil leak

 

you need to get it up in the air or under it and check to see what is actually leaking...at this point i can confidently say "your engine is leaking oil" and that's about it

 

Went under to clean the oil off going to check in the morning but it did look like a small area where a seal between engine and transmission could be leaking from. Also put some Lucas leak stopper in the oil n drove some today but it says a few days so I will have to drive and check maybe Sunday if it is still leaking.

 

If it's dripping from the bottom where the bellhousing bolts to the engine, then it should be either the engine's rear main, or the transmission input shaft seal. Either way, the transmission has to be separated from the engine.

Automatic or manual? MTF smells different, so maybe you can tell that way?

 

well the oil leak has stopped thanks to the lucas oil. as a side note my friend who is a mechanic said he would fix it if I wanted for 500$ which from what i hear is a really good deal. Im going to live with it for now but will keep an eye on it

 

You might also want to check and possibly replace the PCV valve. Check the hoses too. See post #7 in this thread.
