Default 1988 Honda Accord Lxi

Hi all. I have a 1988 Honda Accord lxi that has 390,000K. Recently had a head gasket replaced. The engine runs well with the exception of a sputter when accelerating. When the head gasket blew, I realized I need to replace /remove the Cat, so I straight piped it to the muffler ( runs better), but still the sputter. It has new plugs, plug wires, distributor, fuel filter. While driving down the road at 55-60 in 5th, it will be sputtering, then all of a sudden, it's like flipping a switch and it runs great. What could be my problem....EGR? PCV? Coil? Thanks

Is the CEL on? If so get the codes from the ECU under the drivers seat.
