Default 1989 Honda Accord LX emissions EGR

Took my car to get emissions test done and it failed due to the NO reading being to high. Talking to the guy he says it may be the EGR Valve or Solenoid but he can't tell unless I drop it off on Monday. A few questions:
Are the EGR Valve and Solenoid one piece?
Are they easily replaced?
Where are they located?

Thanks for any help.

I've moved this to General Tech, a place where you will get better answers. Tech questions should go in this section.

I'd start by checking a few other things. Are the tune up items up to date (cap, rotor, NGK plugs, inspect wires)?

Have you checked the ign timing?

Last to answer your question.....they are two different things.

They are both easily replaced. The valve itself can be cleaned alittle carb cleaner does the job.... the solenoid is usually what I found goes wrong.but it doesnt hurt to do both while your at it Most of the time a (you-pull-it) junkyard is the easiest place to find the solenoid. Just becareful remounting the valve. Its on the motor with studs sticking up in a spot that gets fairly hot.(atleast on my generation) Making the studs fairly easily to snap off if over tightened. So be careful
To find these parts on your generation you can download a service manual online or you can usually find a paperback manual for sale at local auto parts store

Thanks poorman212 and jroxz44,

It hasn't had a real tune up in a while and probably needs one. I'll start with the simple stuff and move on from there.
Do you think this could also cotribute to a high idle when first started? After it warms up a bit it tends to idle back down?

Default Repaired: 1989 Honda Accord LX emissions EGR

Car passed the emissions test, just needed the timing set. After the minor tune up, air filter, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, timing adjusted and it passed.
Guessing it was the timing if it was running rich.
Thanks everyone for your input and help.

Leon

Thanks for the update......enjoy the ride

It could have been a combo of the tune up and timing? But the main thing, a regular tune up and a few minutes with a timing light and life is good.
