a friend of mine has stripped his temperature selector dial.the **** is fine and i have freed up the water valve.apparently last winter he forced the dial and it stripped.the dial will pull the cable in and rotate the valve, but it will not push nthe cable out.
is there a diy for a repair,or some photos,or could some one advise me on a fix?
thanks
brett btw i have a 91 and 92 ex and exr respectively, but have never had the **** strip

If like the 5th and 3rd gens, there is the shaft into the controls. Pull the ****, then the shaft and inspect the splines on the shaft. Of course I'm sure you know there is more than one cable "in play" here.

Where is it stripped? Is it the **** you physically grab and turn that is stripped or is it the internal shaft it rides on that is tripped inside the mechanism. If it is just the **** you grab, might be easy to replace, otherwise, you could drill a small hole through it and the itnernal shaft and put a roll pin in or similar.

Sounds like you need a new shaft...bone yard?

The next question is why did this happen? Have you checked the blend door and the heater control cables for free movement?

The actuator wire is single push/pull wire. If valve was jammed and wire was shoved, it probabaly bucked and bowed somewhere. You'll need to inspect wire and linkages for damage. I had this happen on a toyota celica, but was able to straighten the wire and get it to work.

good luck
