We are thinking of purchasing a 1992 Accord LX from our mechanic. He bought it from an old Japanese lady when it had only 20k miles on it. It now has a little over 80k miles on it. It has a new timing belt, new tires, new water pump, distributer cap, CV something or other, etc...(I've got it all written down somewhere). He said the only thing he foresees it needing is new suspension around 100k miles.

However, when I drove it today, I noticed that it rattles, or sort of shakes,when it is in reverse. When I asked him about it, he said that Hondas are notorious for doing that. He also mentioned that it might be a loose motor mount.

Any ideas?

 

I have never heard of a vehicle rattling in reverse. I'd check out the engine mounts and make sure there is no visible play. Also check and make sure that the atf or oil is topped off. As for the suspension, it is not all that difficult. You'll need a coil/strut compressor and time. It'll cost about 200 for everything.

One or more of your engine mounts is bad, extremely common in these cars.

 

Did you ever figure out what your problem was? My 93 is doing the same thing in reverse. I'm going to check my motor mounts. Just curious if anybody thought of anything else.

 

Well, I just noticed today that my car vibrates when I put it in reverse. The rattling was coming from the hood prop rod. It's pretty loose in there and rattles up against everything. You might check that too.

chk the motors mounts, mostly the rear mount ,,make sure that it is not split,, also there should be vacc at the hose going to the motor mount diaphram when idle is below 700 rpm .
