Default 1995 V6 Accord with issues.

First off I would like to say hi to everyone and thanks for any help in advance.

The car is actually not mine, its my girl firends car that I am trying to take care of a couple issues with. I would call myself pretty mechanically inclined but my experience has been pretty much exclusively with chevy (try to keep flaming to a min here )

The car is a 1995 Accord with the 2.7L V6 Automatic, 160,000km and service history is scary...

The first issue is the coolant leak coming from the weep hole shown. From searching here it sounds like a waterpump seal (Agree?). To do this job the search function on this forum has directed me that this job will also require a timing belt change. It seems all the info I find including the shop manuals I found in the FAQ all speak to the 2.2L. Is the job simular to the 2.2 or is there some other place I could find a how-to or shop manual?

The other issues immidiatly on my list are the oil leaks from the pan and from what I'd think is an inspection cover on the back (towards firewall) of the motor. Will a good RTV high temp gasket maker be ok here?

Thanks again,

Water pump will probably have to be replaced.

Instructions for timing belt for the V6:

Thanks for the reply, pretty much all right there. So I see a stubborn crank bolt, hoping some heat will fix me there. Looks like it shows how to align everything to factory timing there but will it be necessary? These belts stretch a lot so that just marking where everything is will be no good? Also would you guys recommend an adjuster belt pulley replacement or any thing else while I am there?

Also am I right that the oil leak on the back side is just a insp cover that can just be poped off and resealed?

Good understanding of cam timing is important in case the valve springs make the camshaft move a bit when you're not looking.

Update time!

Thanks for the replies guys, the job went smooth and without any issues. You were right about the valve springs moving the cams so it was good to know how to set evreything TDC.

For anyone doing this, I ended up buying the crank pulley holder socket and was very glad I did.

When working on the pump I noticed that the largest oil leak was not from the pan or back of the motor like I thought. It seems to be coming from a (24mm, single wire) sensor directly above the oil filter. I am guessing that its a oil pressure sensor? Just need to know what to order.

Thanks guys!

That would be the oil pressure sending unit. Kind of a common source for a leak. Probably costs ~$20 at the dealership now, because it was $15 around 7 years ago for me.

Hello once again! So the car now has zero oil leaks and does not use any antifreeze so big thanks there.

I am slowly working my way through maintenance items that should have been done long ago and have a question about trans oil. Searching has told me that there is no filter to worry about but I have some guys saying that ONLY Honda trans oil will work while others say just get some compatible synthetic. What are you guys running for oil?

I also have two new issues to track down, the first is the speedo works intermittently. I am suspecting the vss sensor? Where exactly is the vss sensor on this car? lol

The car also seems to buck and and not restart when it gets wet. It runs fine otherwise but in the rain it struggles. The search function has overwhelmed me with it being the distributor cap and point being old? Does this sound right?

Use either Honda fluid or try and find some Red Line.

The VSS should be located on top of the transmission near the firewall close to where the transmission bolts to the engine block.

As far as not running well in the wet weather I would get a spray bottle and while the engine is running fine gently mist around then engine electrical connections and vacuum lines, etc. As you carefully work around the engine with the mist you might find the the engine acts up. If so, let the engine dry out and once it runs fine again start misting, but start lower on the engine and work up until you find where there is either a vacuum leak or electrical issue in the area where the engine originally started to act up.

Honda ATF is recommended. Honda DW-1 is the current Honda ATF and is full synthetic.

See the attach image for the location of the VSS on your V6.

When the speedo acts up, does the cruise control work? Assuming the cruise works?
