1996 Accord LX
I just found a 96 Accord Automatic with 42k original miles. I'm looking for a first car for my son and have never owned a Honda, but am well aware of their great reputations.
When I go to look at this vehicle, what should I be aware of? Any typical problems I should be looking for? Based on some searching, it seems like they may have minor transmission issues?
ANY help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The 94-97 did not have automatic transmission issues. The 98-02 did but the 94-97 were good to go.
Common problems with the 94-97 or "5th generation" accord were slow windows rolling up, glove box light staying on, and odometer/speedometer breaking.
Overall they are awesome cars and a great first car for a child. 42k miles is great for a kids first car assuming it is legitimate. As I said broken speedometer/ odometer is common in these cars.
I'd make sure the timing belt has been done. Even though it is recommended every 75k miles it is also recommended every 7 years so even if it hasn't been done due to the mileage it is recommend because of the age of the belt.
Honestly the 5th gen accord is one of the most reliable/easiest to work on/cheapest to maintain cars ever made.

Not that it is needed but I will second that statement.
