Exclamation 1996 accord lx break problems

well iv got a 96 accord lx and about 80% of the time i try and break the pedal gets sucked to the floor. now i read in the manual that this is caused by one set of wheel breaks having a problem so the car shuts them off. and then i only have the other two tires to work with. now iv tried bleeding the problem breaks and its still doing. not as frequently as before but still many many times. i have to pump the breaks now to stop. its not safe. anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is????? maybe my master cylinder? if so how much of a pain is it to fix or replace myself?

thanks, Douglas

It sounds like your master cylinder. Its not too bad to replace. There is a writeup in the DIY section that will explain the procedure.

Not sure what manual you read, but the car can't shut off the brakes.

Wow, I got the same problem in mine. I was told it was the mater cylinder as well. I'm not losing any fluid though, just have to mash and pump when it does it.

The only thing the car can disable with brakes is the anti-lock brakes. The ABS has nothing to do with the operation of the normal braking system.

Brakes are 2-circuit diagonal, so if there's a leak anywhere, it will only take out 2 brakes diagonally across; say for example R-F and L-R. The other 2 brakes (L-F & R-R) will still work but the pedal will go down noticably lower.

That's not the same as the car "shutting off" the brakes, but maybe that's what you read??
