1996 Honda Accord LX TCC circuit malfuntion
Hello:
I have a 1996 Honda Accord Sedan LX with 179,000 miles, automatic transmission, 4 cylinder. I have read through the threads on the P740 code and TCC circuit malfunction which is what the scan says for my car. I am not a car guy but I have read the threads and have a basic understanding of the fact that transmission is failing - a very reliable mechanic confirmed this.
My question is really concerning the ability to drive this car for awhile - in other words, it runs and shifts well (no problem driving it for the last 2 weeks when it was diagnosed) but:
Will I risk being stranded with no discernible "transmission notice", i.e. could it go out at a moments notice? Or will this be a slow process where I may be able to drive this for a few weeks/months?
I would like to drive it for a few months while looking for a different car.
Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

My understanding of P0740 is failure of the torque converter to lockup. It is a hydraulic circuit failure (small chance could be a failed solenoid valve that won't open, but has OK electricals). A different code is set for an electrcal fault in the lockup solenoid circuit.
I have driven a 1997 Acura TL w/ this fault for 5-6 years. CEL stays on, which is aggravating, but no other symptoms. Trans shifts fine. CEL can be set off and will stay off until you drive 55mph+ for short time. TCU detects that engine and output shaft are not locked (excess slippage in torque converter) and sets P0740.
You might try removing and cleaning the lock-up solenoid and checking that it functions when 12V is applied. I did this and confirmed mine was working.
good luck
