Default 1997 Honda accord ex 4dr A/T 4 cyl

Hello, My accord sat for over a year in a Police impound lot. I finally was able to get it back but there are a few issues.

The biggest is the transmission does not shift into 4th gear, also it shifts into the lower gears at a much higher rpm than normal. it wants to shift at 4000-5000 rpm instead of 2500 to 3000.

The car has 125,000 miles on it an I put new trans fluid Honda ATF-Z1, just before it sat.

The dealer over the phone told me to replace the transmission ? That sounded crazy to me, id like to diagnose the issue first.

I just bought 3 quarts of the new Honda (08200-9008) ATF- DW1 fluid and am thinking about changing it.

The current level of ATF fluid is correct and the fluid looks clear and new.

I'm looking for help to diagnise the problem.

I am an experienced mechanic and have a variety of tools such an a good Fluke VOM, OBDII code puller etc...

I have searched the forums for similar issues.

the car has not posted any Tranny OBD2 codes such as A/T DTC P0715, i know there is a PCM replacement and a way to check freeze codes and look for a 4th clutch feed pipe bushing.

Thanks for your help, CH

I did some reading and found a few other people who's cars would shift hard and at high RPM's and not go into 4th gear. there cars shift interlock would also not allow the car to come out of park. Believe it or not, the issue was a TPS, I assume this is a throttle position sensor. Maybe its notfeeding the speed of the car back to the computer and the car thinks it's going slower than it really is. I'm wondering how to trouble shoot this sensor.

Near the top of this forum is a sticky with a DIY thread which has links to the online manuals. Download the manual for the test procedures for the TPS.

When you scanned for codes, did you get any codes?
