Default 2001 Honda Accord RPM problems

My son just bought a 2001 Honda Accord with 92,000 miles. He drove it from South Dakota to Denver and is seemed to run at 75 mph at 3000 rpm. He is not driving again on the highway and it seems to be running at 4500 rpm.

Does this seem to be a problem in anyones eyes. What is a type rpm range for highway driving with cruise control.

THANKS.....Frank

i understood what you said about the rpm being 3000 at 75mph, but then you said

"He is not driving again on the highway and it seems to be running at 4500 rpm"

what does that mean? he's doing 75mph on city streets? the rpm is 4500rpm at what speed? is it a manual transmission? was the car fully warmed up? v6 or 4 cylinder?

can you clarify those things?

Sorry. Yesterday he was driving at 75 on the highway and the rpms were 3000.

Today again on the highway they are about 4500. Why so much higher. Is something wrong?

that much of a difference is something wrong. is it an automatic? if so, was it in D3 and not D4?

Was the engine fully warmed up?
Did he step on the clutch and move the gear shift to the 5 position?

I would have to agree with hondatech. On most cars when you shift out of park it will slide all the way into drive. but on the 6th gen accords, hence the one your son has, it goes right into D3 and it is easy to keep it there.

just make sure its in D4 and try driving 75 again, of course on the highway
