Default 2006 ventilation buttons

My 2006 Accord has developed an age problem. The buttons for ventilation control work sporadically. For example the recirculating button randomly turns on and off; if I engage the DUAL climate control feature I cannot turn it off by pressing the button again. I'm thinking the electrical connections behind the buttons need a good cleaning. So here's my question: do I need to remove the entire radio/ventilation unit to clean those connections OR can the ventilation buttons be removed for access to the electrical contacts?

Do the HVAC self-diagnostic to see if there are trouble code(s). May be due to a faulty mode control motor, etc.

Thank you. I’ll try that over the weekend.
