with the a/c on cold air blows on the passenger side and hot air blows on the drivers side. what in the world causes this?

If you have dual controls the drivers side blend motor may have failed. If you hear grinding/popping sounds from near center of dash, this problem is likely. Door motor is easy to replace on most systems.

Also low charge level on the AC system can cause this problem. Evap become stratified; warm on top and cold down low.
