Default 2008 EX-L 3.5L V6 - Vibration under acceleration

Hi Forum,

First-time poster here.

I have a 2008 3.5L V6 which I purchased as the second owner at 84,000 kms. It has now covered 108,000 kms, and for the most part it has been a pleasure to drive, with only one problem to mention. At approximately 100,000 kms I noticed a virbration under acceleration, soley at lower revs, say between 2nd and 3rd gears as it changes up. The vibration causes the whole vehicle to momentarily shudder, ceasing once it reaches 3rd gear. It's fine after that, only vibrating again once the above is repeated. I'm not sure if this is a significant point, but if I accelerate harder through the lower gear changes I can seem to bypass the vibrating.

Not having contributed to this forum before I feel a bit cheeky for asking, but does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what might be causing the above? Many thanks indeed.

Adam

Hi Tek310. Yes, just 2nd to 3rd, and seemingly only at a lower speed and revs, because if I accelerate harder (through 2nd to 3rd) the vibration is hardly noticeable if indeed at all.

I keep using the word vibration, which it is, but I guess it could also be described as / caused by a hesitation in the engine as it accelerates through 2nd to 3rd.

could be a trans problem.

automatic or manual?
if automatic, clutch bands could be slipping.
manual, you may have a sticking bearing

when and where was the last time you had your transmission serviced?

Thank you for the reply. It's an automatic. Since purchasing at 84,000kms, I have had several oil changes and services at my local non-franchise garage. I feel pretty safe in saying that there has been no specific transmission service though, at least not during my period of ownership. I'm going to get the vheicle back into the garage this week to see what they think. Many thanks.

If your car has less than 80,000 miles i recommend a flush with Honda transmission fluid at your Honda dealer.

It is not recommended to use anything other than genuine Honda ATF

Thank you. It has covered 108,000kms now. I've booked it into the garage for next week. They asked me if the engine warning light had come on the dash, but it hasn't. I'm obviously hoping that it isn't anything too serious. If it is indeed a transmission failure of some sort, I wonder if a warning light would come on.

The light, well that would depend on what might be going on. If any of the sensors on the trans detected a fault it would set a code.

The fact that it is not on, kind of leads me to believe it is not a "failure" of/in the trans....hope for something as simple as an inner cv joint

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. It went in yesterday for a service and inspection and they could find nothing wrong with it at all. That's great on the one hand, but frustrating on the other. Engine mounts, CV joints all tickety boo. I've booked it in for a transmission service next week as a precautionary measure, although I believe honda don't call for a change of transmission fluid until 120,000 miles. I'm some way off that but am happy to run with the service anyway.
