After my last oil change the car started making a grinding noise on cold starts. By cold start I mean if I start the car after 4-6 hours. Each day I notice the grinding noise getting louder and louder. I have provided a video of the start up with the grinding noise.

I would take it to a Honda dealership but the nearest one is 80 miles from my house. If it is something serious I do not mind making the trip.

 

Search for issues with the VTC.........How many miles on it, as it might still be under warranty. Of sourse you have checked the oil level correct.

 

It sounds like the TSB 09-010. I think it has something to do with the cam gear and how vtec is activated.

That is exactly the same issue as mine. It has to be the VTC actuator. I will make an appointment to have the VTC actuator replaced. Do you know if there was a recall on the VTC actuator? My car is currently not under warranty since I already have 95,000 miles on it.

 

There was no recall. In the thread I linked to, there were revised TSB procedures to shorten the labor time and make it easier. Make sure the dealer or independent shop are knowledgeable about the revised procedures to save time and money. Some Honda techs can even doing it faster with their own procedures that they developed that were not listed in the TSB.

 

Sadly I was not able to drive up to the dealer this weekend because I had other things to do. Am I damaging the car in anyway by procrastinating? I am not sure how big of a role the VTC actuator plays.
