20k minder B insane price. whats important?

I just brought the used Accord I bought from Hertz Rentals in for a checkup. That minder B light was on. This dealership in OKC, OK (sitting here now) just informed me the price tag was $278.00.
Supposedly it needs lots of tuneup crap done that my 2000 Civic didn't need until 100k miles.
Why's the price tag so high? Is it important to really care that much? Supposedly it would need it once again at 30k miles.
This car will freaking be unaffordable with all of the maintenance should it continue to be this way.
I would assume oil changes would suffice?
Anyone with advice on maintenance scheduling please let me know what to do on this. I feel used and abused by Eskridge Honda for misinformation prior to service.

I would guess its oil change and tire rotation. I don't have the minder system but I can't think of anything else at 20k. I guess I would also suggest cabin filter and air filter since the rental place probably hasn't replaced them ever. If you do all those yourself it shouldn't be more than like $50.
As for the overall maintenance, I don't know what year you have but it's not expensive if you are proactive. Learn to do the easy things yourself. I have a 2003 accord with 70k miles and have only had to do very cheap maintenance. I will list the only maintenance items I have had to do.
Oil change (including filter). $20
Brake pads $90 per axle maximum, and that is with performance pads. I'd expect like $40 per axle with basic pads.
New rotors. prices vary widely but say $40 each
Tire rotation. Free utilizing spare tire in trunk.
Air filter. $25 or so, depending if you use OEM
Cabin filter. $25 from honda
Transmission fluid change. $30 I have an auto and it's easier than oil change, $10 or so a quart for Honda fluid. Need 3 bottles per drain and fill.
As you can see there is not much to maintaining your car. Everything I listed above is very simple do it yourself work, all you need is someone to show you how to do it once and a few basic tools. That is what this forum is for.
The only tools I have needed are:
18" lift low profile floor jack $90
2 Jack stands $40
3/8" Torque wrench $20
Set of metric sockets $10
Oil drain pan $10
For the price of that first service you can buy all the necessary tools, the oil and filter, and do it yourself. Then you will have all the tools you need for future maintenance.
Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Yeah I have a 2007 model. They claimed to have done some tuning and all sorts of jack. Cabin filters are to be changed at 30k or something like that.
Where can I obtain a generalized instruction guide to do the maintenance that you suggest? I've done minor things before on other vehicles (tractors) but not no any road-borne car.

The owners manual list everything you need to know about maint minder. Your car doesn't have a 30k service interval for anything. Oil life % cars calculate everything based off temps and rpms etc, etc.
If you didn't get an owners manual with the car your local dealer should be able to print out a copy of those pages from your owners manual.
Just a guess, but did their maint package include a fuel injection cleaning service? Big time common rip off that some use to take in more dollars.

you have the bill correct??? post here what they did
i would assume air + cabin filter, oil + filter, Auto tranny fluid maybe?? tire rotation ,
Also what is the car ? input year and model in your signature

Here is the service chart claim:
change oil/filter
adjust valve clearance
rotate tires
adjust clutch
clean battery cables
inspect tire pressure and wear
inspect breaks
inspect parking break
inspect/adjust drive belts
inspect ignition timing/wiring
inspect base idle
inspect suspension
inspect exhaust system
inspect air filter
inspect all fluid levels
I just got this Honda Accord 07 Sedan used with 19000 miles. The light was on, so i took it in. Said it's saying Minder B. Blah. I didn't think they'd do a let's bend the customer over on it. My old civic would just need its oil changed when its reminder would go off.
Supposedly the 30k maintenance is 300+ bucks. And at 60k the timing belt gets changed? My older car was 100k.

And your timeing belt change will probly cost you $700.00 to change, and that might cover the Shop Rag Charges..they are getting crazy in the dealers on labor...
I guess you suck it up and do your own or get a 3rd job to take care your car bills..Oh yeah the 2nd job I didn't mention was for you to take care of your National Health Care
Bills...

Well my little E4 paygrade military check doesn't go very far any way.
Would anyone mind giving me a general suggestion as what needs done and when as far as maintenance? I realize oil change every 5k miles, always have done that.
I'm wondering when I need to care about the timing belt, spark plugs, tranny, and whatever else is requiring service at some point.

Basic maintenance would be
Transmission fluid - 15k - 30k at your discretion
Oil - 3k - 10k depending on quality of oil and type of driving
Air and Cabin filter - 15k or 1 year
Brake fluid - every couple years
Plugs - 100k
Timing belt - 100k
Coolant - Up to you, Honda says 7 years/100k then every 60k I think but others recommend more frequent.
The only really expensive maintenance items are timing belt service and perhaps clutch when it wears. Rest of the stuff is replace when they go bad I guess. The car really is a change the oil and forget about it type of car, or at least my 4 cyl is.
I can't find the instructions at the moment for the maintenance items but I know the oil and transmission fluid directions are in the manual. Engine filter is self explanatory just unscrew the 4 screws on the big plastic cover in the engine bay. Cabin filter is even easier, check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8aSH4gYlU
The other things just I would search on here for or just ask for directions when the time comes.

You basically spent $278 for a oil change and tire rotation. All of those inspections should be part of a oil change. The only exceptions are base idle and timing. Your car is throttle by wire which means no idle stop adjusting and there is no distrbutor so there is no means of adjusting base timing. Clutch is self adjusting if it is a stick. How much can you charge for pulling up a p-brake lever and counting clicks? And check your receipt to see if there is a valve cover gasket billed out on it because if they actually did check valve adjustment they should have changed the gasket.
You never posted engine, but since you said hertz car I assume lx with 2.4L and that being the case if they do try to sell you a timing belt job you need to leave fast and never go back. The 2.4 is a lifetime timing chain motor. I think the local going price for B12 service is $139 and I think even that is high, but it does include the hvac and engine filters.
