Default 5th Gen Vtec in a 6th Gen car, speedo trouble!

Hey Guys, purchased a 1998 6th Gen Accord that appears to have a 1997 5th Gen engine swapped in. I don't know much about these, but in orange marker on the valve cover "1997 Accord" is written. The block code is F23A1, can anyone tell me which engine I have and why its good/bad? I don't even know what size it is...

The CEL is on with one DTC coming up: P0500 VSS Fault

As the engine is from an older car, is this the reason that my speedometer and cruise control are not working? Or are the 5th and 6th Gen differences only cosmetic? I don't even know where the VSS is to check wiring etc...sorry for the newb questions!

Your help is much appreciated!

A little deeper digging found this - https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...-accord-26761/

That answers my question on where to check for wiring problems or if the sensor is even plugged in.

F23A1 and F23A4 is what came in 98 Accords (U.S.), not 97 Accords. F22 came in 97 Accords. The 23 in F23 was for 2.3 litre and 22 in F22 was for 2.2 litre.

Who knows, maybe, the valve cover was from a 97 Accord.

Thanks for that info! Out of curiosity, what is the difference between the A1 and A4?

There's a few threads on this forum and wiki regarding this.

  • F23A1 is 150 hp/152 ft-lb.
  • F23A4 has (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) ULEV certification is 148 hp/150 ft-lb, different exhaust manifold, a 32-bit ECU which uses an Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor (a wide-band O2 sensor) when compared to the F23A1.
They are both basically the same engine block.

It's not a problem. I only stated there are other threads, as there may be more info. others members have posted than what I currently stated.

California had the most of the ULEVs.

Btw: Welcome to the board.

So now that I am aware that the F23A1 had to have come out of a 98-00, that rules out the possibility of an engine era discrepancy causing the speedometer/cruise trouble. Looks like I will be purchasing a new VSS to install!

Thanks for the help guys!

The F23A1 & F23A4 have very different wiring harnesses, so if it was an F23A1 swapped into a car that's wired for F23A4, it would have far far more errors.

Good to know, how can I find out which engine my car came with? I ran the VIN on here but didn't see anything that specific?
