how high does it go? have you ever run it into the red? Have you checked your oil to make sure that there isn't any Anti-Freeze that leaked into it?

is the water pump functioning? If so they it could be one of a few things

1. bad rad cap releasing coolant due to broken pressure releif valve
2. exhaust leak into coolant because of a head gasket
3. blockage in the block somewhere

Ok i'm back after a few ajustments. I just changed the water pump and no i didnt use a honda t-stat. (<----autozone. would that make a diff?) and now i'm still having the same prob. except it only rises to the N above the D4 then it drops back down to the D4. could this be the head gasket?

Dude, the 1st thing you need to do is go get a HONDA thermostat. Go to the dealer and get one. Do not use an after market stat. I cant take credit for the below picture (originally from Hondamatic) but it shows why there is a need for a Honda stat. Also, replace the gasket with the new one that comes with your Honda stat. Try this and then let us know.

if it's rising for a ways then dropping back down it sounds like the t-stat. The engine is heating up and it's not opening when it's supposed to then it kicks over and allows the fluid to flow through and the temp goes down..... either that or you have a bad guage... but it sounds identical to what my 94 civic did when the t-stat went bad
