93 Power Steering Pump Seals Replacement
Hello,
I was trying to look for a DIY guide on rebuilding a power steering pump on an Accord 93 (maybe including 90-92) but couldnt find any. Found only for other model/years.
Recently my power steering fluid tank would overflow with foamy fluid along with a whining sound coming from the pump on a very cold morning (its winter!) which would just go away after a few minutes. I read somewhere in the forum that this is due to air being sucked in to the pump that causes the foaming.
So i bought a power steering pump rebuild kit from the auto store (found in NAPA, Autozone, and Oreilly for about $17). I was just wondering if anybody has a good guide on how to replace the seals? Do i need to remove the pump from the engine bay to do the job or just leave it there? I downloaded the power steering pump visual diagram from honda estore but im not sure where to start really.

Thanks for the manuals! Those helped a lot. I was able to replace all 7 seals. Took me about 4 hours to finish. The most difficult part was removing the pulley. Fortunately i had access to a cheap electric impact driver i use for my tires. Ill try tomorrow morning if my rebuild did anything to solve the whining and foaming problem

I should have said this before......I'd also clean/flush the PS res, there is a small filter/screen at the bottom of it.
I highly suggest that only Honda/Acura approved PS fluid be used in these.

Success! the foaming and whining are now completely gone. I did the clean/flush last month do i have to do it again due to the rebuild? The fluid is dark red compared to the atf dw1 which is quite clear.
By the way, are there ways (or mods) to improve steering experience in these old cars? I mean steering easiness similar to newer cars?

If you used ATF as PS fluid, you have wrong fluid. Honda PS fluid is a clear-amber fluid w/ no red color at all. Flush and replace if you've used ATF.
I know some brands of autos use ATF but not Honda.

If it is dark red then I would plan on a flush. As TX said it is a "clearish/gold" fluid....almost like new engine oil.
As stated there is a screen type filter in the bottom of the res that if you are going all in....I'd clean as best as you can.
