yes there is ALWAYS a TCU for auto trans. 5speed just ecu.
I believe you have to some modifications to the auto ecu to make it work. Not just a simple plug n play from what I remember....I could be wrong tho :/

b/c if I'm not mistaken the AUTo ecu withh pop a CEL for the auto trans. Since it is not getting any type of signal from it.
I can't find the thread I wanted to post about this....It was over on cb7tuner.com

I have a 95 5 speed ECU sitting in my donor car right now.
I wish I had thought of that earlier today cause I could have sold you mine for cheap as I do not need it.
Anyway the ECU and TCU are separate on the 95 - 96 years.
The ECU is the same regardless if it is in am Auto or Manual car.
The one you bought will work fine, like I said I am in the middle of a swap right now and have done at least 30-40 hours of research on the swap so I think I have a good understanding of it.
I do understand why g22cd5 thinks there might be a problem as there is so much conflicting info about the swap. One person says one thing and someone else says the opposite. However it is a fact that the 95-96 ECUS were all the same just the auto cars got a TCU added next to the ECU. The ECU and TCU do not communicate with each other on those years. I have a 97 with a combo ECU/TCU however I am going to use it as I have researched how to trick the unit into thinking all is well.

good info crispin!
btw all honda the TCU is separate from the ecu. I could have sworn I read something that you have to do something to the ecu to make it work. BUt if you got it figured it that’s dope! Maybe it's only for cb7's?? I donno. but anyways your question was answered that's all that matters

They're not separate on all Hondas. The ECU and TCU (Honda actually calls them ECM & TCM) were combined into one PCM (powertrain control module) beginning in 1998.
I remember reading that there's a jumper you can move (or remove?) to change the ECU from auto to manual or vice-versa. Maybe that was only for certain years. It makes sense that the units would communicate more for OBD-2, at least the ECM would pass signals through to an OBD-2 scanner.
