I wouldn't mess with the needle, because it is pretty easy to damage.

I think you'll lose the odometer if you replace the speedometer assembly. You may be able to swap the small circuit board between two speedometers.

OK I think I have the VTEC figured out, it is either the pressure switch, or the screen is blocked not allowing the oil pressure to activate the switch. I found a video on youtube, if there is oil pressure problems to the switch it will turn off the injectors causing driveability issues, that explains the cutting out when the vtec was plugged in (max rpm 4250) vs when I unplugged the vtec and was able to get max rpm to 4500ish.

OK I just ran across this post and I would like to get it validated..."called the local Honda dealer and they told me to check my check engine light with the key on to see if it turns off, if it stayed on my ECU was bad." does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks.

I wouldn't jump to the ECU just yet. Testing would need to be done before just replacing it.

OK so I am looking at the factory service manual it says to use that special tool that plugs into the ECU to run tests. Can I just gently back probe the connector and come up with the same result? I don't know when I will be getting to check it out, I have been working for 12 days straight, 10 hours days at work, no time to play.

If that special tool is a break-out box, then YES you can back-probe the pins. A breakout box just makes that a lot easier.

OK I did some poking around under the hood, does this sound right?
If I unplug EGR I lose the 5 volt ref on TPS.

That shouldn't happen.

Is the 2-pin connector shorted to test for codes, when you are testing for the reference voltage?

Also, when you short that connector, are you getting any codes?
