Unhappy 95 accord isn't accelerating or passing 3000 rpm?? HELPPP!

I drive a 1995 Honda Accord EX and the check engine light has been on for about a month. My car hasn't been running right. When I start my car the CEL (Check Engine Light) doesnt turn on, it turns on when I start driving a little bit under 2000 rpm. As soon as it turns on my car looses horsepower in an instant. I have to push the gas pedal a little more aggresively for it to go normal speed, kinda. But the bigger problem is that it will not pass 3000 rpm. It starts to redline at 3000 rpm and the car will rev back and forth as soon as I get to that point. Can ANYONE help me? I can do the labor I just need to know what the problem.can be and I dont trust my car a mechanic!!

And ideas ?

Have you had the OBD codes read? If so what codes are being thrown?

1995 is OBD-1 so you can read the codes by jumpering the SCS connector with a paperclip. Look at the "common DIY" thread at the top of this Gen.Tech forum. It contains a link to instructions for reading the error codes.

Yeah, I checked the codes and I got codes 12 & 21. I changed the egr valve (code 21) but its running a tad bit worse. And I dont want to mess with the vtec solenoid yet cuhx it seems complicated

EGR problem is more often plugged EGR passageways rather than a bad EGR valve.

VTEC solenoid is between valvecover & intake-manifold. It's got a triangle flange with 3 bolts and a 1-wire electrical connector. Look for loose/dirty/corroded electrical connection or broken wire.

Could it possibly be the vtec solenoid? I'm afraid to mess with it but if it helps. The electrical wire connected to the solenoid was dirty and the electrical piece on the solenoid was chipped. Could that play a factor in my cars defect? I tried cleaning it with a baby wipe and the acceleration problem got a bit worse, it staggers when im accelerating.

Yeah, if it's fractured, that might be it.

I don't have a 95 shop manual, but that would tell you what the electrical resistance should be for that solenoid. Supposedly you can buy the solenoid (dealer$$) - if you do, make sure it comes with it's gasket. If the price is steep, try junkyards?

PS... I've been assuming you have a 4-cyl engine???
