Default 96 LX brake issue...please help

The brakes on this car are best described as inconsistent. One time they work with the pedal at the top and other times the pedal goes almost to the floor. If I pump them they will build up and hold. But the next time I use them I have no idea how far the pedal will go and sometimes wonder if it will even stop. any ideas what might cause this issue ?
How can I tell if I have ABS or not. There are no interior badges with ABS on them and there doesn't seem to be an ABS light on the dash. Turning the key to the run position momentarily turns on all sorts of lights but ABS isn't one of them.

It sounds like you have a bad brake master cylinder.

You should look for the abs modulator on your car. When looking in the engine bay from the front bumper, the abs modulator is to right of the power steering reservoir. Look on ebay to see what the abs modulator looks like.

thanks for the reply. I was thinking master cyl, but wanted a little confirmation. I can't afford to "shotgun" the problem.
