Default 97 accord - tachometer malfunction

Hello,

The tach needle on my v-6 accord started dancing around wildly (shooting from 3,ooo up to around 5,000 rpm and everywhere in between) while I was doing 60-70mph up a long hill. I noticed that the engine performance was affected during that time: there was some hesitation in the motor that felt like misfiring. For the past month I have only driven the car in town on flat ground and the wild tach has mellowed...for now.
Any ideas as to what is causing this problem? --cheers.

hey welcome to the board. this is kinda normal for a slushbox, because 3000 is too low an rpm and 5000 is too high. so lets say your in fourth gear going up a hill, the transmission realizes that it needs some more power to get you up that hill so it downshifts, you would then notice the tach rise up to the point where 3rd gear would be. your car has grade logic technology in it though so if you manipulate the gas correctely it should just stay at the 5000 rpm point until the hill has been climbed.

Hey thanks for the info. I know what you are referring to about the automatic shifting. My problem is different. I was not accelerating up the hill nor was the car shifting at all. Everything was holding steady yet the neddle was bouncing around wildly. One time, this bouncing of the tach needle was accompanied by engine hesitation/bumpiness. Other times the needle bounced around and yet the engine appeared to run fine.

I just ran across this thread in a search. I know it's old, but if anyone else has this problem I have your answer: If it is a 5th gen V6 and the symptomsexactly what this guy says, replace the ignition coil. Easy DIY.
