92 Accord Intermittent Erratic Tachometer -
Hi all,
I've recently started a used car business. I'm on my third honda an am please so many are interested in them.
Here's my problem: At irregular intervals, the tachometer gauge moves erratically and the engine seems to be following suit. If the peddle is left pushed down when the problem occures, the vehicle stalls, surges and sputters. If I let up, every things returns to normal and may not occur again for some time.
I was told to check the ignitor and have replaced that. Same issue persists.
One clue I hope that when this occures when I'm operating the throttle from the engine compartment with the car in neutral, I can hear a muffled knocking noise in the head. These 2 occur at the same time so I'm starting to think they are related as if something inside the head is vibrating and that vibration is transmitted through the ignitor to the tachometer? Could there be something loose or not adjusted properly that could cause this?

I would check plugs of course, and I would consider the fuel injectors and plug wires. Your coil may possibly be going open, but I don't think it is. Also might want to check the IAC valve. And while you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to get a new PCV valve.
I wouldn't worry too much about the knock sound, unless it sounds very loud. If the sound obviously doesn't belong, then it's a problem. But if it's just some mechanical tapping sound, it's probably no biggie. The valves probably need some adjusting. If that's the case ,that's not what's causing the problem here.
