Default 98 Acccord LX Idles but dies at 2000 RPM

We have a 98 honda accord lx with the 4 cyl vtech motor. My brother just replaced the intake manifold gasket and now the car starts fine and idles, but if you give it gas it dies at about 2000 rpm. The exhaust smells like the car is running rich as there is an odor of gas when it is idling. Any suggestions?

thanks

Check over the work for vacuum leaks. Was the fuel rail removed or the fuel lines disconnected?

Is the CEL on?

What are the colors of the three wires going to the MAP sensor?

Just wanted to follow up so someone down the road could benefit from this issue. Apparently when my brother rechecked his work and did some research, he found two wiring harnesses with the same plug that he had plugged into each other's spot. I believe he said it was up by the throttle position sensor somewhere. Thanks to those who replied and sorry I did not post this sooner.

I can't tell you how many times the map and tps sensor plugs have been put on the worng place during a "job like this". Hence the question about what the wire color(s) were, are to the MAP sensor.

Thanks for the follow up and the answer.

LOL, I did this just today.

I pulled the throttle body and the idle valve to give them a good cleaning, in an attempt to solve a rough idle and occasional stall after engine rev.

I plugged those in backwards!.. MAP sensor went into the idle valve plug, and visa versa.

So what I had was an even rougher idle, and when throttling-up, it would rev for a moment, and then stop, as if idle hunting.

Needless to say, I was frustrated after putting all that back together. Luckily, I started with simple remedies. One of them was me asking myself, "Hmm, I wonder if I put those plugs backwards?"

After swapping them around correctly, the car now idles and runs smooooth... my afternoon repair work was a resounding success!
