Default 98 Accord - Starter replacement cost

I have 1998 Honda Accord V4 (automatic transmission) with 190,000 miles. Recently, the car just refused o start. The engine wouldnt crank over. I assumed this to be a starter issue and took it to mechanic. I was charged over $425: $225 for a rebuilt starter and rest for labor (at $95 for diagnosis and installation) and taxes. I have been told I was charged too much since this should cost around $200 or so. What is a typical cost of replacing starter?

You got ripped off. You could get a brand new starter at Autozone for under $200. Installation should not take more than 1 hour.

This is probably typical for shop auto repair. Part is marked up 100% and labor is based on standard labor duration w/ enough time allowed for any dufus that can turn a wrench. Make sure you get a warranty on the starter & installation. Good reason to learn to DIY. Always ask for a firm price before repairs are performed.

good luck

Thanks for the responses. I thought dealerships do the most expensive work. However l checked with local honda dealership and they quoted $360 so even they are cheaper than what I paid. Oh well, lesson learned. I agree that it didnt take them more than an hour. I got the call within an hour that the car was ready.

I did get 12,000 miles warranty on the starter.

go back and talk to manager,, demand an explanation as to why they charge more than the dealer ,, especially when dealer installs a honda starter .. At least demand the difference back from them
next time call around and compare prices.......

labor to replace starter is 1 hr ,and it takes 5 seconds or less to diagnose a bad starter

yes you got ripped off,, non-honda starter cost a lot less than honda starter ,, you can get a non-factory starter for around 120-150 dollars.. Also find out the brand of the starter that they installed ,, a lot of non-honda starter manufactories offer lifetime warranty on the part ...
