Default 98 ignition switch

My sons 98 LX has an intermittent problem where it turns over but will not catch. Then later it will start just fine. Is the ignition switch the likely cause?
Thanks, Larry

This sounds more like an issue with the distributor or ignitor/coil. Try searching the DIY section for more info.

You will have to diagnose when the intermittent problem reoccurs.

Try to listen for the fuel pump to prime when you first turn the key to the II position. The fuel pump turns on for about two seconds while the check engine light does the bulb check. Get in the habit of listening for this sound. Let us know if it is missing or present when the car will not start.

Default dash lights

The dash lights are not coming on at all in any switch position. Wouldn't that be an indication of switch failure?

I would test for 12V to the blk/yel wire going to the distributor and/or coil when the key is in the II position. If you don't have power, then I would suspect the ignition switch.

From your description, it does sound like a problem with the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

Default solved

Ordered a new switch and While waiting for the switch I discovered that it had been replaced under the recall 4k miles ago. Went to pull the wire on the old one and it came right out without pressing any tabs. Pushed it back in and it was quite hard to get it to click in but finally did. Glad I did not take everything else apart before I tried this.
