Default 99 Accoed EX 4cyl. Need help with code...

Hi all. Joined this site in hopes of getting some info on a problem I'm having with my 99 Accord EX sedan. I appreciate any help you can give...

I do all the maintenance on my Accord, and she runs like a new one with 252,000 miles on the odometer. The other day, CEL came on. I took it to AutoZone, and pulled the code... it's P0701. After several google searches, I can't find anything about a fix for this, and with a car that's only worth a couple thousand dollars, I'm not spending a ton of money on it to repair it. Hopefully, the gurus on this site can lend me a hand, and I can affect the repair myself. Here's what I'd like...

P0701 Transmission Control Range/Performance
1. What problems apply to this code?
2. What should I check to figure this out?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated...I'll check back regularly to see if anyone has an answer for this. Thanks again!

The 98-02 accords were notorious for having bad transmissions. The V6 had more failures than the 4-cylinder, but both had failures more frequent than earlier accords.

The P0701 is a generic code for a transmission problem. I would do a drain/refill on the transmission using honda ATF. It takes about three quarts.

So, anything I can do to fix it, that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

You can try changing the trans fluid - use ONLY Honda Trans fluid.....I know what was posted about that but we all have opinions. I say to change the fluid because of "why" these fail. What happens in the OE set up is there is a valve that gets stuck or sticks from time to time. This valve controls/directs the flow of the fluid thru the trans cooler. When it sticks, no fluid flows thru the cooler at low rpm (below ~1,200 rpm). So think about it....stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and the trans fluid is not being cooled.....basically cooks the fluid and the trans.

From there, take it day by day. Some have driven for months/years with the issue before it "goes". If and when it does, I suggest an upgrade on the valve body to prevent future failures, companies offer upgrade kits to prevent/help this.
