Default AC Stator needs replacing???

I was told that the stator on my AC compressor needs to replaced. What is a "stator" and how much can I expect to pay to have it replaced? Is that something I can do myself? Thanks for any help! I have a 2004 Honda Accord LX 4 cyl automatic. It has 160k miles.

Others would call that the ac clutch coil, #12 in pic.

Some models you can change the ac clutch without removing the compressor-which means you do not have to "open" the system and then re-charge, I don't know for sure on your 04.

Can you do it, I can't answer that? You will need to remove the entire ac clutch to get to the coild and then re-install everything.

Replace the clutch coil w/o discharging may be possible, but I haven't heard from anyone who has done this job. I've looked at compressor position and it looks doubtful.

A quick check of Honda shop manual provides no encouragement that repair in place is possible.

good luck
