Default Accord 2.4 Auto question (UK Model)

Just joined this forum and made really welcome and wondered if anyone could shed any light on a query I have with the operation of my Auto Transmission. My car is a 2005 Accord 2.4 Exec Auto S/S and comes with "grade logic" software that is supposed to monitor your driving style and road conditions and using info from various on-board sensors selects the most appropriate gear to use. My problem is poor fuel consumption and my theory is that the transmission when in full auto hangs on to lower gears for too long. If I switch to the S/S setting from full auto whilst travelling at lowish speeds I am able to "manually" upshift a gear resulting in lower RPM for the given roadspeed and hence better fuel consumption without causing the engine to labour in any way. If I move back to full auto it holds the gear and stays at the lower RPM setting until such time as it is necessary to change gear again.
Also, under 30MPH in both auto or S/S you cannot select 5th gear but once over 30 in S/S you can select 5th but you need to be at about 40mph before it will select 5th in auto mode.

I guess that in the USA your transmissions are set up different but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate their input. I have checked connections, vacuum pipes, transmission fluid levels etc but everything seems fine. It might be the way the tranny is designed and the poor fuel consumption down to the way my wife drives but I would like to get more thoughts on the subject.

Regards

Tony

I appreciate what you are asking and the answer is 13500 miles, the majority during the initial running in period were all done on long motorway trips rather than round town.

Lightshow your saying that when your car reaches a certain mileage, things get better for the car? If so can I ask why?

well when honda makes an engine...they try to make the rings, sleeves, pistons as hard as possible.....but absolutely nothing is able to harden a piece of metal more than 10000 miles actually running in a engine with all the heat and the pressure. it just part of the break in. everything seals better after a while
