Default Airbags deployed, looking to replace...

Thinking about buying a 1997 Honda Accord from my neighbor who rearended someone... it needs a new hood, headlight, and just a little tlc that I plan on doing if I get it.. Unfortunately, the airbags deployed in the accident and need replacing... I know of a few places that I can buy everything I need to replace them and was planning on going that route and haveing myself, and a buddy who is a shadetree mechanic install the bags, module, sensors, and whatever else the kikt comes with..

Can this stuff be replaced by my buddy and I or is it something that needs to be professionally done by a technitcian? Has anyone ever done this?

I am just on a tight budget and would be interested in picking this car up if it's cheap enough.

Any help is appreciated!
Joe

Open the thread called Common DIY Threads stickied at the top of this forum. The online manuals link has a 94 shop manual which will help.

My shop manual says that you will have to replace the control unit after the air bags deploy. It also says to use new parts.

So you will have to replace the two air bags and the control unit. Take a look in the manual for the precautions. Attempt if you feel comfortable doing the work.

I have an airbag for the steering wheel I got from pick-a-part a while back. I was going to put it on my accord but I just left it the aftermarket steering wheel on. If you live in CA ill give it to you for cheap.
