Default Auto Transmission Expert needed

I have an Accord with a 4cyl auto. I am experiencing a trans problem. It feels like the there is not enough pressure to apply the first gear clutches when in drive. If I start off in D3, D4 or 1st,it slips and shifts late. If the gear selector is in 2, it takes of fine in low and shifts to 2nd.

I drive the car by placing the shifter in 2nd when at a full stop and as soon as it hits 15mph I hit it to D4 and all is good. If I hit the gas at 20mph while in drive it down shifts into 1st no problem, no slipping.

What is different inside the trans when the gear selector is in 2nd as apposed to 1st. Is there a solenoid that might be activating when placed in 2nd?

Thanks
Tom

What year is this car?? Selecting 2nd should set the transmission in 2nd gear. If it is functioning right it should only be in second. Yea you can take off from a stop like this, I used this method when my trans went.

So I think you might be mistaken and think its going into 1st when it's really not.

As far as the issue itself, let me put it this way. It is a very very rare case when some small external adjustment fixes the problem on these transmissions. This is a sign that you are on borrowed time and need a rebuild.

When was the at fluid changed last?

Two important questions....also can we assume the proper level of fluid is there.

Also, if this is newer than 1989, any stored codes relating to the trans? Any recent work done to the car?

It it a 1999 Accord with a 4cylinder. No Check Engine Light. Will it store codes without the CEL on?

What type of trans is this if I have to start looking for a new one?

Thanks
Tom

I think the D4 light would be an indication of a stored transmission code. Not the check engine light. Is the D4 light flashing or staying on even when the shift lever is in Park?

my d4 light never blinked.

Your bearing guides are more than likely blown out. It will get worse. Do not drive it above 45 mph. You can get it re manufactured for around 2000 or roll the dice on a salvaged unit.

Have is scanned for codes....some trip the lights and some do not (both CEL and D4)

Me, best write up on the 6th gen trans I have found:
http://www.sonnax.com/system/pdfs/35...pdf?1320330979

If you have to go for a rebuild.
