Default Automatic Shifter locked up

I have a 2004 Accord. The shifter will not go from park to drive unless I press the little hole to the top left. I pulled the cover off and it appears the white plastic safety device is broke. Does this sound right ? If so, can this part be replaced or do I need to buy a whole new box ?
Thanks, Jeff.

The cover you pulled off, this would be the cover around the shift lever? If so this sounds like the interlock/neutral safety switch you are ref. Yes you can replace that (at least on 86-89 and the 94-97 you can). I do have to ask how you know it is broke? Don't want to replace something if it does not need to be replaced. Is the brake switch working, fuses good and everything else tied to that switch/circut...

when you cannot get it out of park
First push the horn, if it does not work chk the fuse,,
if horn works ,,,,push brake pedal in , see if brake lites work,,,,,,,,,if not it could be a bad brake switch...

I have the same problem, 2004 accord. 4 cyl, 4 door. exl.

Will not shift out of park when I start the car.

But, when i turn the key, and not start the car, the gearshift will move into neutreal, and then i can start the car. Brakes and horn are fine.

What do you think is the issue?

Check your reverse lights. If they are good I would assume you have a bad shift solenoid. I removed mine totally b/c of this issue. It's a safety thing so you don't start the car in gear and run someone over.
