Default Before I go changing my alternator...

Is there anything I need to know other than unplugging the two wires on the left side, unbolting the alternator, bolting the new alternator, and plugging in the two wires? This is my first time replacing an alternator.

...or I could just go look it up in one of the manuals provided in the DIY Section, lol!

sounds like you got it, just a reminder to disconnect the battery first.

Lol. Good point. That's something I totally overlooked.

The manual says to remove the power steering pump before changing the alternator. I know I should do what the manual says to do, but is it really necessary to do that?

You don't have to do that. You will find that at least one bolts for the alternator is tough to get at. You will have to find the right length of extension and deep socket to get room to use a socket wrench.

Removing the P.S pump would give you better access to it. If you find the bolt removal difficult, remove the P.S. pump. It isn't difficult to unbolt.

Alright! I've got all the necessary tools and printed out the troubleshooting and removal/installation guides for the alternator and power steering pump and belt. I hope the salvage yard sells me a working alternator!

Well, 1 thing you overlooked is the belt, but I guess that's pretty obvious. Might as well change it if it's worn.

yes, one thing I think you should know before changing the Alternator.
Most of the time the brushes are worn out and need replaced.

They are located under the rear cover and cost around $27 for the brush pak.

When installing new brush paks you can use a feeler gauge to push the brushes in the holder while sliding over the armature.

Eh, this is my first alternator change, so wish me luck. It does not look like a hard task. The only thing that looks difficult is changing the alternator without removing the power steering pump. The belt seems fine though, and I don't think I would trust myself enough yet to change the brushes. Maybe I'll do that with my old alternator since I only get $10 back on the core charge.
